NIMASO Trivia: Is antibacterial glass film a learning experience?

NIMASO豆知識:抗菌ガラスフィルムは勉強代?

April marks the beginning of a new life and the season when you can feel the spring-like weather. However, it is also a season when germs are likely to grow, so it is important to properly clean places where germs are likely to grow, such as the kitchen and dining table.

When you think of germs, what comes to mind other than cleaning your room?

Yes, a smartphone!!

Smartphones have become a necessity in our daily lives, but the fact is that there are a lot of bacteria on the screen, so you have to disinfect it once or twice a week.

"It's a bit of a hassle to disinfect your smartphone every week, and when I get busy I often forget to disinfect it," said a NIMASO staff member.

The official NIMASO Twitter account conducted a survey on smartphone disinfection. Most people disinfect their smartphones with disinfectant wipes. However, NIMASO's previous testing showed that disinfectant wipes can remove the oleophobic layer that is coated on the surface of glass films. So, is there a convenient way to protect your smartphone? That's where antibacterial films come in. But do smartphone antibacterial films really have an antibacterial effect?

Currently, there are two main antibacterial film technologies in use on the market: "Ag+ (silver ion) sterilization" and "hybrid antibacterial."

・Ag+ (silver ion) sterilization

Ag+ is a heavy metal ion with extremely strong antibacterial properties, commonly known as silver ion. The antibacterial properties of silver ions were recognized in ancient times, about 1200 years ago, when people started storing drinking water in silver jars to prevent water spoilage.

This is a sterilization technology that we often see. The first thing that comes to mind is Shiseido's "AG Deo 24". Fujifilm has also developed a sterilization spray using Ag+. This technology is also often used in glass films with antibacterial properties.

・Hybrid antibacterial

The hybrid antibacterial coating applied to the surface of glass penetrates bacterial cells and inhibits the action of enzymes, thereby halting the function of the bacteria. This action suppresses the growth of bacteria on the glass surface. However, in products that have an antibacterial coating on the surface, the antibacterial effect weakens as the coating deteriorates.

In March of this year, NIMASO launched a new product called "Smartphone Antibacterial Film" that uses "hybrid antibacterial technology" based on the idea of "allowing smartphones to stay clean without having to disinfect them every day."

We apply a hybrid antibacterial coating during ion exchange, which has a permanent antibacterial function and effectively suppresses the growth of bacteria. With 99.9% antibacterial properties (antibacterial rate for E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus according to SGS inspection report), you can use it safely every day.

You are currently taking measures to prevent infectious diseases by disinfecting with alcohol every day. Do you disinfect your smartphone every day?

If you love cleanliness but are a bit lazy, antibacterial film may be your best choice.

Of course, switching to an antibacterial screen protector does not mean you can prevent all infections. While you should still take basic precautions such as wearing a mask, gargling, and washing your hands, why not also take precautions against infections on your smartphone, which you use every day?
