NIMASO Tips Series: Tips for removing yellowing and dirt from clear cases, by material

NIMASO豆知識シリーズ:素材別、クリアケースの黄ばみや汚れをとるコツ

Recently, simple clear cases (transparent cases) are very popular rather than cases with a wide variety of variations. In addition, Korean-style translucent cases that give off an atmosphere are also often seen.

Such transparent or semi-transparent cases can be used to create a unique atmosphere, making them look stylish. However, because they are transparent or semi-transparent, any yellowing or dirt will be visible.

Today, NIMASO has compiled tips on how to remove yellowing and stains from different materials. Let's take a look together.

First, let’s look at the material used for the clear case: polycarbonate (PC).

Material characteristics:

Polycarbonate is a hard plastic material. It is very strong, and is said to be 30 times stronger than acrylic and 200 to 250 times stronger than glass. It is easy to process and lightweight, so many hard cases are made using this material.

Care Instructions:

  • Maintenance is easy; light stains can be removed by simply wiping with a soft cloth after soaking in water.
  • If the stain does not come off even after wiping with water, try rubbing the stain with a cloth soaked in a neutral detergent.

*Polycarbonate material has poor chemical resistance, so we do not recommend using chemicals such as alcohol or thinner on it.

Recently, transparent or translucent cases made of TPU material have become popular. TPU is a plastic material called thermoplastic polyurethane.

Material Features :

It has an intermediate element that is softer than the polycarbonate mentioned above, but harder than silicone, which bends easily when force is applied.

The material is also highly transparent, so it is often used for clear type cases.

The advantages of TPU are that it absorbs shock when dropped and is resistant to dust and dirt. However, the disadvantage is that it tends to yellow easily.

Care Instructions:

There are two types of yellowing: "discoloration caused by deterioration of the plastic itself" and "discoloration caused by ultraviolet rays." However, discoloration caused by deterioration of the plastic itself cannot be removed.

How to remove yellowing caused by UV rays

1. Dissolve oxygen bleach in water in a 1:1 ratio and apply the case.

2. Leave it in sunlight for a while (for a few days, if possible).

3. If the case is clean, rinse it with water and let it dry.

Are there any preventative measures to prevent yellowing?

Unfortunately, not yet.

However, all NIMASO clear cases are specially processed to be resistant to yellowing. The clear case for the 13 series is made of a combination of TPU material and glass, so the transparency lasts longer than regular TPU cases.
