The method published by Apple is as follows:
Required Devices:
iPhone with Face ID (iPhone X or later) running iOS 14.5 or later
Apple Watch Series 3 or later with watchOS 7.4 or later
Environment to be prepared:
Your Apple Watch is paired with your iPhone.
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled on your iPhone and Apple Watch
Your Apple Watch has a passcode set and Wrist Detection enabled.
Your Apple Watch is on your wrist and unlocked.
How to set up Unlock with Apple Watch
Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
Tap Face ID & Passcode and enter your passcode.
Go to Unlock with Apple Watch and turn it on next to your Apple Watch's name. If your Apple Watch doesn't have Wrist Detection turned on, you'll be prompted to enable it now.
How to unlock your iPhone with your Apple Watch
Make sure you're wearing a mask, sunglasses, or ski goggles, and that your Apple Watch is on your wrist and unlocked.
Lift your iPhone or tap the screen to wake it.
Just look at your iPhone to unlock it, then swipe up from the bottom of your iPhone screen to start using it.
So, what is the reality?
After setting up NIMASO using the steps above, you will need to enter your passcode the first time you put on a mask to unlock it. From then on, you can unlock it even if you are wearing a mask.
When you unlock your iPhone while wearing a mask, your Apple Watch will vibrate slightly and a notification of the unlocking and a "Lock iPhone" button will appear on the Apple Watch screen. However, it can be unlocked by someone else. If your Apple Watch is within range, it can be unlocked by someone else who is wearing a mask. In that case, you can remotely lock your iPhone by quickly tapping "Lock iPhone" in the Apple Watch notification. Then, your iPhone will not be able to be unlocked even if you are not wearing a mask, unless you enter your passcode.
